We began our first efforts in Emergency Support by partnering with a nonprofit who was saving Ukrainian children from war zones and transporting them to their relocations Centers in Poland. They wanted to use our kits for these sweet children that left everything behind and endured weeks of hiding before being relocated. Once they were safe, the adults that were caring for them needed meaningful things for the kids to do and ways to bond with them.
We created our MVP kit for this acute need. It is a kit that can be used solo or with a friend, in a very small space or outside, and it is all about giving these children a sliver of their childhood back right where they are. From a soccer ball to a jump rope, sidewalk chalk, juggling balls, and a water bottle, we hope it brings joy!
We also ran an Active Discovery Camp for a group of 50 Ukrainian refugees in British Columbia in the summer of 2022. We used other Active Discovery kits as the curriculum - giving experiences of gardening, music, art and sports. These shared active experiences always lead to stronger relationships!
Active Discovery teamed up with the Maya Vakfi Foundation whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children and youth to grow in their ability to reach their real potential. Maya wanted to use our MVP kits in their Disaster & Emergency Program to get the ball rolling after bringing in scores of youth who had endured extreme hardships of the devastating earthquakes that destroyed their homes.
Maya will be using our other Active Discovery Kits as a learning tool moving forward - Language & Leaping, Music & Movement and Art & Agility, coming soon!
Each year Active Discovery looks for a group of children that have had a bit of their childhood snatched from them due to natural disasters, war or some other acute situation, that could be blessed by receiving our MVP Kits or a Camp. If you have an organization to nominate, please reach out to Mary Ann Sprague-Denison.
